On 10th September 2011 our Mike Cattermole attended the Member of Parliament for Durham City, Roberta Blackman-Woods’ surgery to discuss the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill (LASPOB) proposed by the Coalition Government. Mike expressed his concerns about the proposed changes to Conditional Fee Agreements, or ‘no win – no fee’ agreements and Legal Aid, by which most innocent victims of negligence gain access to justice.
Ms Woods ensured Mike that this was an issue that she also feels very strongly about and she has been following the Bill through Parliament and intends to oppose it at every juncture.
About the proposed Bill Mike says: “a person’s access to justice is, and should remain, a fundamental right in any democratic society. At Sweeney Miller we believe that no matter what your status, people should be entitiled to compensation following an accident caused by another’s negligence. This is why we are strongly opposed to the passing of this Bill”
